Mars polar lander found?

by WyldKard on March 20, 2001

If you’ll recall, the geniuses at NASA lost the last polar lander they sent up to Mars. It was said that the lander likely crashed on the planet’s surface. However, word has it that the lander may have been found, thanks to a “top-secret” spy agency that analyzed pictures taken of Mars’ surface.

Now, what I want to know is where this secret spy agency came from, and why, if they’re so secret, we know not only who they are but what kind of stuff they do. Kinda defeats the purpose of being a “top-secret” organization, no?

Anywho, while no one’s 100% sure if the picture analyzed contains the polar lander, it seems to be pretty likely, and preliminary examination suggests that the lander is still in one piece. If this is true, that means that the lander bombed out thanks to a software issue, which is especially important to me, given my computing background. I assume this incident will be used as an example for writing proper code and error checking techniques for some years.
