pr0n: timeless.

When people tell me that the media, Internet, TV, and other technologies are desensitizing us to violence, I always like to point out how far Western society has come. No longer do we watch gladiators kill one another in mismatched fights, no longer do we cheer to beasts ripping apart members of a particular religious sect, and we have a ban on “cruel and unusual punishment” that prevents our use of firing squads, hangings, stonings, and crucifixion.

What’s funny to me is that the same arguments made for violence is often made for sexually explicit material as well, and people are always pointing at those crazy Europeans for their sick pr0n, which just happens to be less obvious in the States because of our condemnation of sexually explicit material (not because it doesn’t exist in the US). Well, a recent public opening at Pompeii proves yet again that the ancients were sexually secure, and quite happy with their pr0n, which was not only found throughout Pompeii, but most recently found in the bath house complete with unisex changing room.

For those without lesser education, Pompeii was an ancient city buried by lava in the course of one day, and is often bunched with myths of Atlantis, since it was a glorious island city that completely vanished in record time, leaving no traces of its people behind. The excavations that began some years ago were so valuable because of the high level of preservation the lava offered, leaving whole people intact. The city, far advanced compared to European cities post-Rome, boasted a high merchant lifestyle with modern comforts like indoor plumbing.

And now, evidently, we know that Pompeii’s merchants would have loved to get their hands on Penthouse.
