I swore allegiance to Internet Explorer many moons ago, and it had nothing to do with any monopoly nonsense. Fact was, Netscape was so bad, it made Satan look like a wuss. However, my buddy zenwolf yelled at me the other day when he realized that his article was not accessible via the Techno-Ninjitsu section in his browser of choice: Mozilla.
His gripe was not a new one to me – I knew that mendax.org didn’t render properly in Netscape, and though I tried to fix it once, the issue did nothing more than to make my head hurt, so I swore off the horrendous compatibility scripts I’d been working on, since Netscape’s variance in working with layers was too confusing, especially since they decided to change everything around. Again.
However, Netscape is reborn. Or, rather, reverting to its roots, one might argue. Mozilla is alive and kicking, and version 1.0 is set to be released very soon. This might be a good thing for the browser wars, but only so long as people stick to agreed-upon standards.
The standards issue itself is an interesting one, and I could rant about it for ages, but I won’t. However, I will say this: mendax.org is now Mozilla compliant, and though there are a few minor rendering issues to work out (the page doesn’t display as nicely on IE now), zenwolf can sleep softly tonight knowing that his article is still accessible when the news blurb disappears from the front page.
