Who does Polygraph work for?

by WyldKard on November 13, 2002

I don’t know why, but “Polygraph” makes me think of a new female villian for the next Austin Powers movie. But I digress.

My buddy MVXW clued me in on a fairly recent 2600 report about the polygraph test (or lie detector test for you laymen), being rather innacurate. An even more recent opinion piece gives some examples of just how reliance on the polygraph test has cost the lives of US operatives.

The report, issued by the US National Research Council, supports earlier claims that polygraph tests are too innaccurate for use by government agencies, often giving false positives or false negatives.

Seeing as I may be taking a polygraph test myself in the near future, I find the report rather interesting. The unfortunate thing isn’t simply that we’re not catching everyone who lies, but that we’re turning down people for positions that they may very well be qualified for, all on account of this one test. That tends to place potentially serious ramifications on this country’s future, especially if the people we’re turning down are better qualified than the people we’re hiring.
