Every so often, the word “spyware” gets thrown around when a program collects data on you and sends it off to some data warehouse for analyzation. However, in this case, your OS is the spyware. Evidently, Windows Update isn’t just sending MS the version information of your OS and other MS products, but of other software on your computer also, leading to what many consider to be a breach of privacy.
Yet another reason for people to use alternative operating systems, IMO. Of course, once enough people raise a fuss about this, I’m sure MS will patch the “problem,” but it certainly throws a red flag up for me, since MS may very well try something similar again the future.
