Following up our previous news post comes word from Australia that ATMs will soon be using iris scans to access accounts. For those unaware, scanning the eyes for unique information generally takes two forms – retinal and iris scans. The latter happens to be more accurate, though has had some shortcomings in the past, particularly in areas of proper eye alignment and reflection/distortion from glasses.
If those obstacles were overcome, it may mean more emphasis on biometrics in the future, particularly as it relates to home security. We can already access our personal computers with consumer-grade fingerprint scanners, but I forsee much more emphasis on this type of security in the near future. After all, why deal with losing ID cards, ATM cards, et al when all you need is your own body?
