One of the most preposterous things I’ve come across of late is the banning of ferrets in California, which, as I understand it, goes back a long ways to a law stating that non-domesticated, non-native animals to California are not to be owned by inhabitants of said state.
What’s ridiculous about the law, unlike other archaic laws across the country, is that it’s still enforced, despite the fact that ferrets have been domesticated for some time now, yet the banning on ferrets in California has not been revoked, and the initial list of animals allowed has not been updated.
The matter of particularly aggrieving to me because I am a ferret owner, and seeing as I will be moving to California in the near future, I will have to give up my pet, Loki, on account of misinformation and a slow bureaucracy. Fortunately, there are those who are trying to make a difference.
Perhaps Governor Schwarzenegger will, with his pop-culture fame, help make a difference. For a state that claims to be trendy, however, it’s weird laws like this that put California way behind other states.
