I’ve been following Daring Fireball for some time now via RSS, and most of John Gruber’s observations and commentary are spot on. That said, I’m a little confused about his love for MarsEdit, the desktop blogging application for OS X. I’m not confused as to why someone would enjoy using MarsEdit, but merely that someone could declare it “best-of-breed”, when its closest competitor, ecto, is heralded as similarly fantastic. In fact, the features between the two are practically identical, yet ecto costs less to buy.
I’ve stayed away from desktop blogging clients until recently, and naturally gave both MarsEdit and ecto a shot, but I quickly settled on ecto, which seemed more user friendly to me. That’s not to say that Gruber and others didn’t have similar experiences with MarsEdit winning out, but the differences between the two applications are not significant enough to boast one as a clear dominating force; “best-of-breed” seems a bit too goady a phrase for what amounts to a simple preference, rather than an obvious leap in features and functionality.
